    Hellenistic History
This mummy portrait of Isidora was made in Roman E This mummy portrait of Isidora was made in Roman Egypt about 100 AD. Isidora's name is written in Greek on the left side of the linen wrappings surrounding her portrait. She wears a gold wreath, pearl earrings, and necklaces set with pearls, emeralds, and a large garnet. Her linen was dyed red.

Mummy portraits were naturalistic paintings of the deceased which were painted on wooden boards that were attached to the mummies. These portraits were found throughout Egypt, the majority of them came from the Fayium region or the (Roman) Egyptian polis Antinoopolis. While mostly a feature of the Roman period, the earliest of these portraits date back to the first century BC.

The portraits, which were made with wax or tampera, covered the mummified faces of the people they depicted and always show the head of a single person in a very realistic fashion. Due to nature of their preservation in the dry climate of Egypt, most of these (about 900 are still in existence) are still in very good condition. Production of the (Fayium)mummy portraits is thought to have stopped at some point between the 3rd and 6th century AD.

A silver tetradrachm minted in Bactria under Demet A silver tetradrachm minted in Bactria under Demetrius I of Bactria around 200-185 BC.

Once the easternmost region of Alexander the Great's empire, Bactria (comprising much of present-day Afghanistan and parts of Pakistan) broke away from Seleucid rule in the 240S BC and became an independent kingdom.

On this coin, Demetrios wears an elephant headdress in the manner of Alexander the Great, a symbol of his military victories in India. The reverse displays, not displayed here, an image of Herakles and the name King Demetrios written in Greek.

A Roman mosaic with Achilles and Briseis made from A Roman mosaic with Achilles and Briseis made from stone and glass dated to 100-300 AD. Enough remains of this scene to identify it as an episode from Homer's Iliad: the moment when Briseis, the enslaved concubine of the Greek hero Achilles, is taken from him to be given instead to Agamemnon, king of Mycenae.

Briseis is led away by two heralds, Talthybius and Eurybates, who wear traveler's hats and carry staffs. Achilles, holding a lyre and seated next to his companion Patroclus, watches from the far left. The older, bearded man may be Achilles's tutor, Phoenix, or King Nestor of Pylos.
