This exquisite low-relief portrait, dating from ar This exquisite low-relief portrait, dating from around 130-140, originates from Italy (possibly). The subject of this artwork is Antinous, the cherished companion of Emperor Hadrian. Following Antinous's tragic death in 130, Hadrian deified him, leading to the widespread placement of his portraits across the empire.

Antinous is depicted in this relief with a laurel wreath adorning his hair, symbolizing his identification with the god Apollo. The sculptural finesse of this piece unequivocally indicates that it was crafted in one of the premier official sculptor workshops in the city of Rome. The portrayal captures the posthumous deification of Antinous and the enduring influence of his image propagated by Emperor Hadrian.

In this portrayal, Ares is adorned with his helmet, and his spear is positioned behind him. The artistic style reflects the Classical influences within Nabataean art.

Notably, the Nabataeans identified Ares with their own Arabian deity, Shi' al-Qawm, who served as the guardian of caravans and warriors. This artifact dates back to the early 1st century AD and is situated in Raqmu-Petra, near the Temenos Gate.
