These two figures most likely represent the Hekato These two figures most likely represent the Hekatomid ruler of Karina Maussolos and his sister-wife Artemisia. Although this has not been verified, these two statues were found at the Mausoleum at Halikarnassos. One of the original seven wonders of the word of, the tomb for Maussolos was designed by Pytheos and Satyros.

Construction began at some point during the reign of Maussolos, who reigned in Karia from 377 until 351 BC. At the start of his rule, the region in the southwest of Ionia still belonged to the the crumbling Persian empire, yet Mausolossos was create a new kingdom with the capital at Halikarnassos. The tomb itself is said to have been 140 ft high with a peristyle of 36 columns topped with a piramide roof and marble quadriga.

Some of the most famous sculptors of the age such as Skopas, Leochares, Bryaxis and Timotheos or Praxiteles, supposedly worked on the sculpture of the mausoleum. This is by far my favourite bust of Alexander the This is by far my favourite bust of Alexander the Great! This one was found near the Erechtheion on the Acropolis in 1886 and is now visible in the Acropolis Museum.

It is believed to haven been made between 340 and 330 BC, right in the middle of Alexander’s conquests. The work is most likely an original of the sculptor Leochares, which is interesting because normally official images depicting Alexander were made by the sculptor Lysippos.

The center of yet another beautiful red figure kyl The center of yet another beautiful red figure kylix called the drinking cup or Aristophanes. It was found in Vulci in Italy and made around 410 BC. Interestingly, we know the names of the potter - Erginos - and it’s painter Aristophanes.

The center image shows the god Poseidon killing a giant while Gaia, the earth goddess, and giant’s mother pleads for his life. More gods are engaged in a battle on the outside of the kylix.
