In ancient Rome, slaves were legally considered pr In ancient Rome, slaves were legally considered property, often referred to as a “thing” or “mancipium” due to the way they were acquired. While a dominus was the owner of a slave, it wasn’t necessary for a slave to have a specific owner to be considered a slave. Slavery could occur through various means, such as being born into slavery, taken as a prisoner of war, becoming enslaved due to debt or kidnapping, or even if a free child was abandoned and subsequently sold into slavery. Life as a slave was harsh, with slaves being completely subject to their master’s will. Although some Roman citizens prided themselves on treating their children, wives, and slaves justly, slaves couldn’t form families. Over time, a form of informal slave union called “contubernium” emerged, but it had no legal recognition, and any children resulting from such unions were considered the property of the master, who could choose to sell them. Slaves generally had no property rights, but there was an exception for a “peculium,” a set of assets granted to them by their masters, including money, slaves, and real estate, which they could manage. Despite the hardships and social stigma of slavery, there was a possibility of gaining freedom. This was achieved through “manumissio,” a process where the master relinquished ownership. Once freed, a former slave, known as a “libertus,” obtained full legal rights, including the right to vote actively but not passively. They would often take on the name and surname of their former master, who would provide protection and become their “patronus.” The inscribed message on the bronze collar from the 5th century CE, found in the Musei Capitolini, conveys a request to return an escaped slave to their owner. It reads, SERVUM SUM DOMINI MEI SCHOLASTICI V(IRI) SP(ECTABILIS), TENE ME NE FUGIAM DE DOMO PULVERATA, or “I am the slave of my learned master, a man of respectability. Hold me, so that I not flee from the dusty house.” This inscription reflects the practice of using such collars to identify and possibly retrieve runaway slaves during ancient times. #history #rome #roman #slavery #romanslavery #ancienthistory #archaeology #ancient #romanhistory

This beautifully crafted drinking cup is decorated on the interior with a vivid depiction of a sacrifice scene: two men are in the act of slaughtering a piglet on an altar, a common ritual in ancient Greek religious practice, often performed as part of festivals or rites of passage. Sacrifices like these were an essential aspect of worship in ancient Greece, symbolizing the offering of life to the gods in exchange for favor and protection. Meleager likened the collection to a bouquet of flowers, with each poet representing a different bloom, reflecting the diversity and beauty of their work. The Head of Jupiter, discovered in Otricoli betwee The Head of Jupiter, discovered in Otricoli between 1781 and 1782, was restored in 1783 by Giovanni Pierantoni, who reconstructed the bust, neck, and back of the head. This head was originally part of a colossal statue of Jupiter, the king of the Roman gods, seated on a throne. It likely stood in the Capitolium of the Roman colony of Ocriculum. Jupiter, also known as *Jupiter Optimus Maximus*, was the chief deity in Roman religion, often associated with sky, thunder, and justice. He was regarded as the protector of Rome, embodying power and authority. Statues of Jupiter were common in Roman temples, and he was typically depicted holding a thunderbolt and a scepter, with an eagle by his side, symbolizing his supreme status. The statue from which this head comes was most likely modeled after the famous statue made by the Athenian sculptor Apollonius for the Capitoline temple of Jupiter in Rome.
